Beyond the Breathing: Why Our DPT-Led Birth Class is the Ultimate Game-Changer for Modern Parents
Preparing for childbirth can feel overwhelming. With endless conflicting advice online, social media birth trends, and outdated information, it is easy for expecting parents to feel anxious rather than empowered.
We designed a Labor + Birth Class to cut through the noise. Taught by Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon, PT, DPT, our birth preparation class combines evidence-based physical therapy, practical birth partner training, and mental conditioning. We equip you with the exact physical tools needed to approach labor day with clarity, confidence, and peace of mind.
Whether you are planning an unmedicated birth, a hospital delivery with an epidural, or a gentle C-section, here is everything you need to know about your pelvic floor and why physical therapy guidance makes all the difference.

Why a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) is the Ultimate Birth Educator
Childbirth is one of the most physically demanding, biomechanical events a body will ever go through. While traditional birth classes often focus solely on labor stages or basic breathing, Doctors of Physical Therapy are experts in human movement, pelvic floor mechanics, and musculoskeletal health.
When you learn to give birth from a Physical Therapist who specializes in pelvic health, you aren't just learning what happens during labor—you are learning how to make your body work for you.
1. Master Pelvic Mechanics & Fetal Positioning
A DPT understands how your pelvis opens, rotates, and adapts at each phase of labor. Instead of lying flat or guessing positions, you will learn targeted movements and positions that open the pelvic inlet and outlet, directly helping baby move down the birth canal and reducing labor time.
2. Learn True Pelvic Floor Relaxation
Pushing effectively isn't just about strength; it's about knowing how to consciously yield and relax the pelvic floor muscles under pressure. A DPT teaches you how to coordinate your breath with your pelvic floor to stretch safely, minimizing perineal trauma, severe tearing, and long-term dysfunction.
3. Prevent Common Labor Issues Before They Start
From tailbone pain and severe hip dysfunction to stalled labor and pelvic floor injury, a physical therapy approach addresses prevention upfront. You will walk away with tailored movement techniques and comfort strategies designed to protect your joints and pelvic floor throughout the entire process.
What the Research Says: Systematic clinical research highlights the transformative impact of physical therapy interventions during pregnancy. A systematic review published in the International Journal of Gynecology & Obstetrics demonstrated that structured pelvic floor muscle training supervised by movement specialists significantly reduced the duration of the second stage of labor and decreased postpartum pelvic pain (Schreiner et al., 2018). Furthermore, targeted prenatal pelvic floor exercises are directly correlated with higher rates of spontaneous vaginal delivery and reduced rates of severe birth injury.
What Makes Our Class Different?
Led by Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon, PT, DPT, our interactive class bridges the gap between clinical expertise, biomechanics, and realistic support.
Key Highlights of the Curriculum:
Movement Techniques for Labor: Targeted movement routines and birth positions that create space in the pelvis and encourage efficient contractions.
Pelvic Floor Relaxation Tips: Deep breathing and physiological muscle release strategies designed to lower resistance when it's time to push.
Labor Pain-Management Strategies: Hands-on counter-pressure techniques, positioning, and nervous system regulation to manage pain effectively.
Hands-On Partner Training: Birth partners are taught exact physical support measures; where to press, how to support your body weight, and how to actively assist during contractions.
Prevention & Recovery Roadmap: Learn proactive body mechanics to prevent severe tears, joint dysfunction, and common post-birth complications.
