Summer in New Mexico means one thing… fiesta season is here.


Between graduation parties, weddings, backyard cookouts, birthdays, family reunions, and every “just because” gathering in between, the calendar fills up rápido. And honestly? We love it. There is something special about long summer evenings, good food, loud music, and being surrounded by the people you love.


But with all the fun can also come exhaustion, dehydration, sore feet, skipped routines, and that feeling of “okay… I need a recovery day after this weekend.”


At Balanced Physical Therapy + Wellness, we believe wellness should fit into real life, not take you away from it. So here are cinco consejos from one of our experts, Stephanie Carranza, DPT to help you enjoy every celebration this summer while still taking care of yourself.


1. Hydrate Before You Feel Thirsty

New Mexico heat is no joke, amigos.


Whether you are dancing at a wedding, chasing kids around a birthday party, or sitting outside at a graduation cookout, dehydration can sneak up on you fast. By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already trying to catch up.


Try alternating fun drinks with water throughout the event and do not forget electrolytes if you are spending hours outside.


Pro tip: bring your cute water bottle. Sí, hydration can still match the outfit.


2. Wear Shoes Your Body Loves 

Listen… we are not saying you cannot wear the heels or the boots.


We are just saying your body will definitely send you a strongly worded email later if you stand in uncomfortable shoes for six hours straight.


Summer parties usually mean more standing, dancing, walking, and moving around than we realize. Supportive shoes can help reduce foot pain, knee irritation, back discomfort, and post fiesta soreness.


And if your feet are already hurting? Maybe your body is saying “oye… help me out a little.”


3. Do Not Skip Meals Before the Party 

We know the strategy. “I’ll just save my appetite for later.” Pero honestly? That usually leads to overeating, energy crashes, headaches, or feeling sluggish halfway through the event.


Having balanced meals and snacks throughout the day helps your body maintain energy and keeps you feeling good longer. Plus, your body deserves nourishment before the party starts, not just after the tacos arrive.


And yes… you should absolutely still enjoy the tacos.


4. Sneak in Movement Throughout the Weekend 

A busy social calendar can throw off routines fast. One party turns into three events, suddenly it is Sunday night, and your body feels stiff.


Movement does not have to mean an intense workout. Go for a morning walk before the fiesta. Stretch while getting ready. Dance with your cousins. Play outside with the kids. Take a lap around the venue while catching up with family. Movement counts, even when it looks like fun. Especially when it looks like fun.


5. Rest Without Feeling Guilty 

This one matters most. Summer can get busy fast, and sometimes we forget that rest is part of wellness too. Your body needs recovery just as much as it needs movement. Give yourself time to recover the next morning with hydration and rest. Your body works hard during busy weekends, especially when you are dancing, standing, walking, and celebrating for hours at a time.


Rest is not about missing out. It is about helping your body feel ready for every fiesta ahead.


Enjoy the Fiesta… and Take Care of You 

At the end of the day, wellness is not about avoiding celebrations. It is about feeling good enough to fully enjoy them.


So go dance. Eat the cake. Celebrate your people. Make the memories. Just do not forget to take care of yourself along the way, también.
