At Balanced Physical Therapy + Wellness, we believe every person deserves access to care that helps them move better, feel stronger, and live life with more confidence. Today, on National Scleroderma Day, we are proud to bring awareness to a condition that impacts thousands of individuals and highlight how specialized physical therapy can support those living with scleroderma.

This past weekend, our team had the privilege of attending Albuquerque Scleroderma Education Day, an incredible event focused on education, awareness, and community support for individuals living with scleroderma. Events like this are so important because they help connect patients with resources, healthcare professionals, and others who understand their journey.

At our Balanced Physical Therapy + Wellness Lymphedema + Neurological Rehabilitation Center, we have the honor of working with individuals living with scleroderma who have found physical therapy to be extremely helpful. While every person’s experience with scleroderma is unique, personalized rehabilitation can help address many of the challenges that come with this complex condition.

What Is Scleroderma?

Scleroderma is a chronic autoimmune connective tissue disease that causes the body to produce too much collagen, leading to thickening and hardening of the skin and, in some cases, affecting internal organs. The word “scleroderma” means “hard skin,” but the condition can impact much more than the skin alone.

There are different types of scleroderma, including localized scleroderma and systemic sclerosis. Symptoms and severity can vary greatly from person to person, but many individuals experience changes that affect:

• Skin flexibility and mobility

• Joint movement and stiffness

• Muscle strength and endurance

• Swelling and fluid buildup

• Fatigue and overall function

• Daily activities and quality of life

Because scleroderma affects the body in different ways, having a personalized approach to care is essential.

How Can Physical Therapy Help with Scleroderma?

Physical therapy does not treat the autoimmune disease itself, but it can help manage many of the physical challenges associated with scleroderma. Our skilled physical therapists' can create a treatment plan based on each person’s symptoms, goals, and lifestyle.

At Balanced, our team focuses on helping patients maintain mobility, improve function, and feel more confident in their bodies.

Improving Mobility and Flexibility

Changes in the skin and connective tissue can sometimes make movement feel restricted. Gentle mobility exercises, stretching, and movement strategies can help patients maintain range of motion and participate in activities they enjoy.

Supporting Strength and Endurance

Fatigue and changes in activity levels can make daily tasks more challenging. A customized strengthening program can help improve overall function, energy, and confidence with movement.

Managing Swelling and Lymphedema Concerns

Some individuals with scleroderma may experience swelling or changes in lymphatic function. Our Lymphedema + Neurological Rehabilitation Center specializes in helping patients manage swelling through evidence-based techniques.

Improving Daily Function

Our goal is not just to treat symptoms. Our goal is to help people continue doing the things that matter most to them. Whether that means returning to hobbies, improving independence, or making everyday activities easier, rehabilitation is centered around each patient’s individual goals.

Why Specialized Care Matters

Scleroderma is a complex condition that requires thoughtful, individualized care. Working with healthcare professionals who understand the challenges of autoimmune and connective tissue conditions can make a meaningful difference.

Our therapists take the time to listen, understand your experience, and create a treatment plan that fits your needs. We believe that successful rehabilitation starts with a partnership between the patient and their care team.

You Are Not Alone in Your Scleroderma Journey

Living with scleroderma can come with challenges, but having the right support system can make a difference. Community events like Albuquerque Scleroderma Education Day remind us how powerful awareness, education, and connection can be.

If you or someone you love is living with scleroderma and looking for ways to improve mobility, manage symptoms, and maintain quality of life, our team at Balanced Physical Therapy + Wellness is here to help.

Your journey is unique. Your care should be too.
