Labor + Delivery: Master Your Body Mechanics with Albuquerque’s Premier Pelvic PT Childbirth Class

Preparing for labor and delivery isn't just about learning what to expect in the hospital room, it is about understanding how to move, open, and support your body through the physical event of a lifetime. Albuquerque-area families now have access to specialized, evidence-based childbirth classes led by a dedicated pelvic physical therapy expert.

Led by Xela Oyer-Javon, PT, DPT, PRPC, our new monthly birthing class goes beyond traditional childbirth education to give expecting parents direct control over their birthing experience.

Why Physical Therapists Lead the Ultimate Birthing Class

While traditional hospital-based childbirth classes offer valuable overviews of hospital protocols, receiving instruction from a pelvic health physical therapist provides an elevated level of care.

Physical therapists are licensed body mechanics experts. We spend our entire careers studying musculoskeletal alignment, pelvic floor function, dynamic movement, and force distribution. Attending a PT-led labor class bridges the gap between basic hospital prep and functional, physical readiness.

What the Research Says About PT-Led Childbirth Education

Clinical literature highlights the distinct advantage of integrating pelvic physical therapy into your prenatal preparation:

  • Evidence-Based Results: Scholarly research published in the Journal of Women's Health Physical Therapy underscores that targeted antenatal pelvic floor education and physical therapy preparation significantly improve maternal self-efficacy during labor.

  • Reduced Interventions & Trauma: Studies show that birthing individuals who attend a specialized birthing class focused on pelvic floor mechanics experience lower rates of severe perineal trauma and reduced labor-related anxiety compared to standard care alone.

By combining clinical body mechanics with hands-on movement, our labor class equips you to work with your anatomy rather than fighting against it.

Meet Your Instructor: Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon, PT, DPT, PRPC

New Mexico native Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon brings specialized expertise to our local community. Prior to returning home to New Mexico, Dr. Xela worked at a hospital birth center in Las Vegas, preparing women for birth and providing acute postpartum physical therapy immediately following delivery.

"During my own pregnancy, I experienced anxiety surrounding labor because I saw the process firsthand through my work. I realized if I felt nervous as a healthcare professional, others attending standard birthing classes must feel even more overwhelmed especially with so much misinformation out there. After welcoming my son last year, I became even more passionate about making sure women feel empowered with accurate, evidence-based information."Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon

What You and Your Partner Will Master in Our Labor Class

This interactive birthing class bridges the gap between clinical mechanics and real-time labor support.

1. Pelvic Biomechanics & Stages of Labor

Understand how the bones, ligaments, and muscles of your pelvis shift during each phase of birth. We also review medical treatment options and considerations so you can advocate for your choices with confidence.

2. Targeted Movement & Birthing Positions

Learn physical positions and movement strategies tailored to your pelvic anatomy to facilitate labor progress, manage discomfort, and maximize optimal fetal positioning.

3. Actionable Partner Support Techniques

Partners learn hands-on comfort measures, positioning counter-pressure, and real-time support techniques to become active, effective support persons throughout labor.

"Partners would constantly ask me, 'How can I actually help her right now?' Partners can be just as nervous as the birthing mother, which is why we equip both of you with hands-on tips and tricks so your support person knows exactly how to step up in every single stage of labor."Dr. Xela Oyer-Javon

Why We Strongly Encourage Couples to Attend Together

  1. Active Empowerment: Partners transition from passive observers to skilled support persons.

  2. Double the Retention: Having your partner learn alongside you in our childbirth classes ensures you have a dedicated advocate who remembers key mechanics when labor begins.

  3. Clear Roles: Partners receive practical, stage-by-stage instructions so they always know how to assist.
