When searching for physical therapy in Albuquerque, one of the biggest concerns patients have is insurance. Do you need a referral? Will your insurance cover physical therapy? Has your copay changed?
At Balanced Physical Therapy & Wellness, we work with insurance plans every day and believe patients deserve clear answers before they ever step into the clinic.
To help explain how this works, we spoke with Marie Torrez, Territory Director of Operations and Insurance Expert, who oversees insurance processes across our Albuquerque clinics.
Do I Need a Referral for Physical Therapy in Albuquerque?
New Mexico allows Direct Access, which means many patients can begin physical therapy without a doctor’s referral.
According to Marie, “Most orthopedic cases can be seen without a referral.” This includes common conditions like back pain, joint pain, and sports injuries.
However, some specialty services do require a referral before treatment can begin, including:
Pelvic health therapy
Occupational therapy
Lymphedema therapy
Pediatric specialty services
If a referral is required, our team helps coordinate with your provider so care is not delayed.
Which Insurance Plans Require a Referral?
Insurance requirements often cause confusion, but Marie explains there is a consistent pattern most patients should understand.
According to Marie: “Medicare plans and all Medicaid plans require referrals, most commercial insurance plans do not.”
Although many insurance plans don't require a referral, insurance rules can change. That's why we never rely on assumptions. Every patient’s benefits are checked individually. Verifying everything ahead of time helps prevent surprise bills and unexpected costs.
If insurance does not cover care or a referral is still pending, we also offer a self pay option so patients can still be seen if they want or need to get started.
Why We Take Insurance at Balanced Physical Therapy & Wellness
We believe physical therapy should be accessible to the Albuquerque community. Accepting insurance allows more patients to receive the care they need without unnecessary financial barriers.
Working with insurance also allows:
Lower out of pocket costs for patients
Coordinated care with physicians and specialists
Clear treatment planning based on covered benefits
Our goal is to remove stress from the process so patients can focus on healing.
Our Full Insurance Verification Process
Before your first physical therapy visit, our team completes a full insurance verification process for every patient.
“We make sure the patient’s insurance will cover services prior to the first visit,” Marie explains.
This process includes:
Contacting your insurance company directly
Confirming active coverage
Verifying physical therapy benefits
Checking if a referral is required
Confirming your current copay or coinsurance
Why Starting Physical Therapy Early Matters
Delaying care can slow recovery and sometimes increase long term costs.
“We like to get patients in quickly so they do not delay recovery,” Marie says. “If there is an urgent need, such as after surgery, we will begin care and work on getting the referral from the doctor on our end.”
She also reassures patients that starting care promptly does not typically impact cost.
“It does not impact cost if the referral comes in a few weeks after treatment has started,” she explains.
Early intervention often leads to:
Faster recovery
Fewer visits overall
Better long term outcomes
