When it comes to eating well, it’s not about being perfect—it’s about finding a sustainable balance (see what we did there?) that helps you feel good, move well, and enjoy life. Whether you're sitting down to a regular weeknight dinner or a big family gathering, nutrition plays a huge role in your energy, mood, and even your recovery if you're in physical therapy.
Why Nutrition Matters
Food is fuel. It doesn’t just affect your weight or appearance—it powers your immune system, supports your muscles, and helps you stay energized throughout the day. Especially for those recovering from injury or managing pain, eating well can support your healing journey.
Simple Strategies for Healthy Eating
Here are a few fundamentals that make eating healthy both doable and enjoyable:
1. Prioritize Protein
Protein is key for building and maintaining muscle. Aim for about 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight, spread out over 3–5 meals or snacks per day.
2. Focus on Whole Foods
Choose ingredients you can pronounce—fruits, veggies, lean meats, whole grains, and healthy fats. Keep your meals simple and familiar. Most people eat the same 10–15 foods on repeat, so make those choices count.
3. Hydrate Wisely
Water (and electrolytes!) helps with everything from digestion to muscle function. A good rule: drink half your body weight in ounces of water daily.
4. Keep Portions in Mind
You don’t have to skip dessert or grandma’s famous mashed potatoes—just enjoy them in portions that feel good. Nutrition is about patterns, not perfection.
5. Make Room for Fun Foods
Food isn’t just fuel—it’s also cultural, emotional, and social. Enjoy your favorite treats in moderation. One indulgent meal won’t undo your progress, just like one salad won’t make you healthy overnight.
It’s a Long Game
Healthy eating isn’t about strict rules or cutting out all your favorite foods. It’s about the averages over time—consistently making better choices that support your energy, your health, and your goals.
