Lymphatic Friendly Exercise Program led by Scotty Salyer

At Balanced Physical Therapy and Wellness, we are proud to introduce a new movement based class designed specifically for individuals living with lymphedema and lipedema. This program was thoughtfully created to provide safe, supportive, and effective movement for people of all mobility levels.

Our goal is simple. We want to help you move with confidence, feel supported, and experience the many physical and emotional benefits of guided movement in a medically informed environment.

Meet Your Instructor: Scotty Salyer

This class is led by Scotty Salyer, a dedicated member of our Lymph and Neuro Clinic team.

Scotty was born and raised in Albuquerque and serves as a lead tech and ACSM certified personal trainer at Balanced Physical Therapy and Wellness. He recently earned his degree in Exercise Science from the University of New Mexico and will begin physical therapy school at UNM this fall.

Scotty has a deep appreciation for movement and the many ways it enhances quality of life. After working closely with individuals living with lymphedema and lipedema, he recognized a need for accessible, supportive exercise options tailored to their unique needs. That experience inspired him to create this introductory movement class.

His goal is to educate, encourage, and empower people to move with confidence. While the class is designed to support those managing lymphedema or lipedema, it is also ideal for anyone who wants to begin moving more, reconnect with their body, and discover what movement can offer them.

What This Class Is Like

This class is welcoming, adaptable, and grounded in clinical knowledge. Every session includes structured movement designed to support lymphatic flow while respecting each participant’s individual abilities and limitations.

Participants can attend using a wheelchair, a walker, or while moving freely. Exercises are modified so everyone can participate safely and comfortably.

What a Typical Session Looks Like

Classes last approximately 30 to 45 minutes and require little to no equipment. Scotty leads participants through a planned series of movements that typically engage the full body, including arms, legs, core, and breathing work. He demonstrates each movement and guides the group step by step.

An additional team member is usually present to provide support and help accommodate individual needs throughout the session.

How Exercises Are Adjusted

Movements are intentionally adaptable. Many exercises can be performed seated or while leaning on a chair or wall for stability. Participants are encouraged to move at their own pace, and modifications are provided to match different comfort levels, strength levels, and mobility needs.

How Safety and Comfort Are Prioritized

Safety is always the top priority. Every exercise is designed with accessibility in mind, and participants are never pushed beyond what feels appropriate for their body. The environment is supportive, respectful, and encouraging so that everyone can focus on moving in a way that feels safe and manageable.

Who This Class Is For

This class was originally developed for individuals diagnosed with lymphedema or lipedema, but it is open to anyone seeking guided movement in a supportive environment.

It may be especially helpful for people who:

  • Are unsure how to exercise safely

  • Have experienced setbacks or feel hesitant about movement

  • Want professional guidance tailored to their needs or condition

  • Are looking to build confidence and reconnect with their body

Whether movement is part of managing a medical condition or simply a personal wellness goal, this class provides a safe place to begin.

Goals of the Class

The primary goal of this program is to help participants move safely while improving overall function and quality of life.

Participants may experience benefits such as:

  • Greater comfort and confidence in movement

  • Increased muscle activation and cardiovascular support

  • Improved body awareness and understanding of safe limits

  • A sense of support within a welcoming community environment

Why This Class Works

Lymphedema and lipedema require specialized care, and not all exercise programs are appropriate for these conditions. This class is effective because it is led by a trained professional, grounded in medical understanding, and tailored to each individual rather than following a one size fits all routine.

Movement plays an essential role in supporting lymphatic health. Both blood and lymphatic fluid circulate through the body in many ways, but one of the most important mechanisms is muscle activation. When muscles contract during movement, they create what is known as the muscle pump. This process helps circulate fluid throughout the body.

When movement is limited, fluid flow can slow, which may lead to buildup in certain areas and potentially worsen symptoms associated with lymphedema. Regular, intentional movement helps support lymphatic flow, manage symptoms, and improve overall circulation and health.

Guided movement ensures that exercises are performed safely, consistently, and in ways that support long term management.

The Importance of Consistent Movement

Consistency is key when managing lymphedema and lipedema. Avoiding movement can allow fluid to accumulate more easily, which may increase discomfort and limit function over time.

Many people living with these conditions feel unsure about how to move safely or worry that exercise might make symptoms worse. This class helps address those concerns by providing education, supervision, and reassurance. Participants learn what their body can do, how to move safely, and how to build confidence through supportive guidance.

A Supportive Place to Move and Grow

This class is more than just exercise. It is an opportunity to learn, build confidence, and experience movement in a safe and encouraging environment. Whether you are managing lymphedema or lipedema, returning to activity after a setback, or simply looking for a supportive way to move more, this program is designed with you in mind.

At Balanced Physical Therapy and Wellness, we believe everyone deserves access to movement that feels safe, purposeful, and empowering. We are honored to provide a space where that can happen
